Welcome Class of 2019-20

This site is what you will use next year to navigate this course. It is currently being updated as we are switching textbooks, due to the previous text book’s raise in cost. Each Section that we cover will be based on your textbook Chapters and all work/assignments can be found here. Please do not work ahead as things will be changing with the new textbook. This will be finished at the start of school in August (hopefully).

Below is a list of books you will need during the course of the year:

New Textbook: Merriman, John. A History of Modern Europe: From Renaissance to the Present. 4th edition. Norton & Company, New York 2019.

Novels:

Machiavelli. The Prince    (Term 1)

Voltaire. Candide   (Term 1)

Darnton. The Great Cat Massacre: and other Episodes in French Cultural History (Term 2)

Shelly. Frankenstein  (Term 2/3)

Marx and Engel. Communist Manifesto (Term 3)

Conrad: Heart of Darkness  (Term 3)

Remarque. All Quiet on the Western Front (Term 3/4)

Don’t be afraid to ask questions regarding any of these

LEQ Project

As a class you will each select 3 LEQs. Each student will compose a thesis for their selected LEQs (make sure the number matches the the number on the master list). Then they will bullet point 6 specific facts that would help answer that question. The class will then put together a study guide which they can use to help study for the AP test.

Making Connections

This is your final project before the AP test and will serve as a good review. Below is the instructions for the whole project.

Topics: Ruler, Domestic, Cultural, Economic, International, Misc.

Phase 1: 1500-1700 Spain, HRE, England, France

Phase 2: 1700-1800 England, France, HRE/Austria, Prussia, Russia

Phase 3: 1800-1900 England, Italy, Prussia, France, HRE/Austria

Phase 4: 1900-2000 England, Germany, France, Russia

Phase 5: Split into partners (2)  from your group. Create a connections chart spanning over three phases. You must have 9 events from your timeline, two topics, and two countries. Students will do one example during class so as to help them with their project.

Friday: Meet in Pigott Center – where we will draw our connections charts and explain the connections to the class.
